Cruising Stories at the General Meeting

OWSA ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hello OWSA members,

We had a wonderful interactive OWSA General Meeting on March 16th with the topic of Racing in 2022. Stephanie Walker led the meeting along with many seasoned OWSA racers, other race captains, racing judge, and club leaders in the sailing community. It was a fantastic representation of the many aspects of racing and featured some seasoned OWSA sailors/racers notably sharing their experience with members.

It is with much appreciation that we acknowledge Stephanie (Steph) Walker for the exceptional contributions that she has given OWSA by rewarding her with the 2021 Crystal Sail Award. Last year she created a team to develop a more defined presence in the racing community for OWSA. She hosted a 4-week Race Clinic, OWSA Beer Can race, and OWSA Womens Regatta. Her natural enthusiasm, inclusivity, and passion for racing encourages others participation. Please join the Board in giving Stephanie a whole-hearted thank you when you see her.

Sailors are learners and our Education classes are going full steam ahead. We have a wealth of knowledge in our members who are happy to share their knowledge in a classroom setting. Thanks to Gail Taylor, Becky Huseby and Alice Stuckey for recently leading the 7-week Basics Sailing Class.

Safety first! This year the three BOAST boats all had their rigging inspected and, as a result, our 2 Ranger-20s need to have their upper shrouds replaced. Progress is being made to have this happen as soon as possible. People in the sailing community are willing to share their knowledge.

As the sun gathers longer in the sky, our hopes are enlightened with the long sailing days on the horizon.

See you on the water!

Warm regards,

Laura

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Volunteer for One or Many Evenings during the Race Season

What a great learning opportunity, and you also get to enjoy the best view on the river during a sailboat race.

OWSA members can volunteer to be on the SYSCO Race Committee (RC) boat during the upcoming race season with the first race starting April 19th.  No experience is needed as all instruction will be provided at the dock before the race.  Just sign up on the OWSA website: Signup up here by making a free booking. Volunteers will be contacted by Race Captain, Denny Damore, to volunteer on the Race Committee boat on either Tuesday or Thursday night.  Generally, the boat leaves the dock between 5:00 - 5:15 pm from a marina either on Marine Drive or Tomahawk Island and is out on the river until the last boat finishes the race around 8-8:30.

This is a great way to meet sailors, to support the sailing community and learn about the roles of the crew on the committee boat who manage the race. The spring race series starts on April 19th and racing is every Tuesday night and Thursday night through August. If you have any questions about this OWSA volunteer, don't hesitate to contact Shancy at education@owsa.net.

EDUCATION

OWSA's 7 week Sailing Basic class wrapped up on March 22nd.  It is great to see so many ladies interested in continuing to learn about sailing and boating.  We had great students and fabulous instructors and guppies for the class.  Special thank you to our instructors Gail Taylor, Alice Stucky, Becky Huseby, Michelle Bennet and Jacki McLaughlin.  And of course we couldn't run the class without support from our amazing Class Registrar and Guppies.  Thank you to Berry, our Class Registrar and our Class Guppies, Laura and Kitty.

If you have any questions about upcoming classes, don't hesitate to email education@owsa.net for more information.
