Our First WNS is out!

OWSA ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ahoy ladies!

The OWSA Board is pleased to announce that in it's second year of COVID, we have found a suitable answer to getting all of OWSA's wonderful programs off their feet and working this year.  WNS is underway, Education has been plugging away all spring, planting seeds for new sailing experiences and we are racing!  It's incredible!

All of this could never have happened except for one thing...teamwork.  Teamwork absolutely makes the dream work and what I see are beautiful blossoms blooming everywhere.

I am always amazed at the magic that can happen when we put our incredible minds and a little bit of good faith effort forward.  If we really did what we were capable of with our minds, we would truly astound ourselves.

So, here's a challenge - let's try to astound ourselves with the beauty of creation we can share with our own two hands, with a smile, with the power of a kind word.  I have realized over time that the most impactful gifts we can give are free and it's important to know that a small, kind gesture  or an offer to help on a project could lead to impacting someone positively for the rest of their life!

Let's pay it forward and share our inherent goodness with others for this is, to the core, what OWSA is all about!

OWSA'S MISSION: This corporation's primary purpose shall be to increase the number of women who sail on boats by providing education and experience in the art and science of sailing as a competitive and/or recreational sport, while creating a supportive teaching and learning environment in collaboration with the general sailing community.

So, fill your cup up and share the inherent goodness within yourself, celebrate the magic of your creation and all of the creation and abundance that surrounds us. It's truly good stuff!

Sail on!

Commodore Jen

JUNE GENERAL MEETING

Ten Things I Wish I Knew Before I Went Cruising - What it is really like to pry yourself away and be "out there". The time between the blissful and the rare harrowing moments. Life at sea in all its color, comedy and profoundness.

Please join us in welcoming Nancy Erley (Captain of two World Circumnavigations) to our General Meeting on  Wednesday, June 9, 6:30pm - 8:00pm

Nancy Erley led two voyages from Seattle around the world aboard her Orca 38 sailboat, Tethys. “As the skipper of an all-woman crew, Nancy fashioned a circumnavigation that should go down in the record books as one of the soundest, most seamanlike journeys in the modern cruising era.  Like all competent voyages, Tethys circumnavigation was notable for its lack of disasters.” George Day, publisher Blue Water Sailing magazine.

In 2006 Nancy was presented with the Leadership in Women’s Sailing Award sponsored by BoatUS and the National Women’s Sailing Association.  The award honors a male or female who has built a record of achievement in inspiring, educating and enriching the lives of women through sailing.

Nancy holds her USCG 100-ton Master of Ocean license, is an Instructor Evaluator-Ocean for the International Sail and Power Association, a HAM radio operator KI7DP, and an advanced scuba diver and delivery skipper.  Women who would like to learn with Nancy can join her as crew aboard Tethys in the Pacific Northwest www.tethysoffshore.com.

Although there is discussion underway by the BOARD for a change in our COVID guidelines, COVID-related precautions must continue at least through the 2021 series.  In order to keep everyone as safe as possible, please continue to be aware of that COVID safety guidelines are still in effect.  If there is a change to the COVID safety guidelines, we will send it to each of you by email.

BYLAW REVIEW

After the completion of an hour-long Bylaw Review meeting, which was held in the evening on May 13, it was realized that there was insufficient time within which to complete the entire Bylaw review.

In order to get us all on the same page so we have a more completed picture to discuss, OWSA's Board has decided that it would be best to allow it's Commodore to complete the entire Bylaw review, describing the document as it is written, in video format and get it to each of you as promised at the May General Meeting, for your review.  Once that is completed, we will schedule another meeting to discuss the Bylaws and Nomination Policy in its entirety.

This is an effort to help us all understand the election process that will face us at the end of the year. Knowledge is power and we believe it would be helpful to share the reasons why behind how our elections take place, as it is written in the governing document.

Stay tuned for a link to the Bylaw review.  We truly look forward to whatever discussion shall follow.

UPCOMING CLASSES

Register soon for June sailing clinics on line at OWSA.net
Only a very few spots remain open, so check the calendar and grab this chance while you can.

Single Handing Clinic: Friday June 4, 6pm, chalk talk, and Saturday June 5, 10am-2pm on the water.
With quiet hands-off mentor and kibitzers aboard just in case, practice handling your boat on your own while docking, tacking and jibing.
Only one spot remains open in this small class.

Cool Maneuvers Repeat: Tuesday, June 8, and Friday, June 11, 6-9pm chalk talk on line; Saturday June 12, 10am-2pm on the water.

For those who missed the first Cool Maneuvers class this year.  This is a thorough class and great for beginners and "refreshers" as well.
Using the motor, practice general boat handling under the influences of wind and current while steering, docking, anchoring, communicating and more.

Cruising Basics:  Three Wednesday evenings, June 23, 30 (no WNSail conflict) and July 7, 6pm-9pm in person, in a classroom.  The object is to go through the process of planning an actual cruise which participants may join if they choose.  We will decide dates, locations, chartering, provisioning, boat systems, navigation (intro to basic coastal piloting).

Any questions, please contact Classregistrar@owsa.net or Education@owsa.net

Masks will be required if we meet indoors (location TBA), and on board if the skipper/mentor chooses, even if everyone is vaccinated for COVID.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

We are so proud of our Racing team that there must be a shout out to our incredible Race Captain, Stephanie Walker.

Stephanie raced against all odds as our Race Captain in 2020 with the onset of COVID.  Bound and determined, in her second year as OWSA's Race Captain, she is off and running.  Currently she is working hard to complete an amazing race clinic for the ladies of OWSA.

Stephanie is also one of our Wednesday Night Sail Skippers, owner of her trusty boat Wildheart, and she continues to give so much to the sailing community.  We are extremely lucky that she has decided to share her time, expertise, boat and skills with OWSA - what a gal!

Thank you, Steph, for your kind smile, all of the grace you share, your incredible skillset, your patience and knowledge, and the love of sailing you share with this community.  We truly appreciate all that you do!

DOCK TALK COMPLETES SPRING SERIES SHOW!

In an effort to build community while not allowed to meet socially, Dock Talk was born for the racing community. The pilot episode last August showed that the concept worked and there was interest. The show is run under the OWSA Education umbrella and brings all sailors and racers together to share knowledge and stories. The racing talent came from the entire community. SYSCO Spring Series featured 4 shows in 6 weeks, ending with a Spinnaker Special show with focussed programming on flying a spinnaker sail. After the one-hour show, we opened up for general chat. Just like being on the dock!

Dock Talk takes a break for the SYSCO Summer Series and is scheduled to return for the Twilight Race Series with three shows. If you are interested in a speaking part, or helping with the show write docktalk@owsa.net.
