OWSA ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ahoy ladies!

As we enter the magic of the recreation and re-birth of spring, all I have to do is look to the work needed for preparation as inspiration.  While most of us are working our best towards a spring clean this season, it's a nice time to remember what we're here for, and to focus on letting the old from our past flow away with love and forgiveness like water flowing under a bridge, taking the debris from the spring runoff with it.

The OWSA mission statement simply states:

This corporations primary purpose shall be to increase the number of women who sail on boats by providing education and experience in the art and science of sailing as a competitive and/or recreational sport, while creating a supportive teaching and learning environment in collaboration with the general sailing community.

We can all take this statement a bit further by remembering to honor and respect ourselves and our sisters, regardless  of situations from the past and remembering a few Golden Rules as the sailing season commences and we all head to the docks.  Two that come to mind are:

Do onto others as you would have them do onto you; and

If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

Wishing you all a safe and wonderful spring.

Sail on!

Commodore Jen

A little bit about Cheryl...

I began boating early on, even becoming a professional deckhand in the US Army for four years.  In my early 20’s I sailed for the first time on a small day sailer in Mobile Bay, Mobile, AL.  However, it took me until my late 20’s, early 30’s, to begin sailing with any consistency.  I was a great deckhand.  I did what I was told and stayed focused on my job.  I did not really learn to sail, but rather how to work on a sailboat.  In 2005 I moved from Mobile out to Portland.

Before I made the cross-country trip I took my son on an extended venture to Italy where he and I spent 20 of our 30 days aboard a gorgeous Sparkman Stephens 42’.  This was the experience that really hooked me!  Every bit of being on that boat, even with 5 other people, my son and a 2-year-old included, was amazing.  The dream began here!

Once I arrived in Portland, August 2005, I immediately found my way onto a Ranger 20 as crew during races.  I also began meeting other sailors and crewed for them as well, as time permitted.  Eventually I was invited on a delivery that would be bringing a boat home from Port Angeles after the Oregon Offshore race.  This would be my first ever offshore sailing.  After having such a gorgeous offshore motorsail, seeing a smooth Columbia River bar crossing, and getting an uncommon view of the shoreline all the way up the river to Portland, I was a happy girl.

It was probably 2-3 years before I met the Oregon Women’s Sailing Association.  Here I gained skills and confidence in boat ownership and skippering that led me to finally buying my Morgan 38’, Wahine Toa. Four years later and here I am in La Paz, Mexico, over 2,000 blue water miles away.  Sometimes I still can’t believe it!

Code of Ethics

The OWSA Board has received a few requests from members to create a Code of Ethics or a Code of Conduct for our membership.  The OWSA Terms and Conditions have always served as the acknowledgement of membership and outlined the safety requirements, but they do not spell out how members should conduct themselves.

The OWSA Board has identified various examples of a Code of Ethics and they are broad and varied in scope.  A suggestion has been made to add a section to the Terms of Membership indicating members will treat everyone with courtesy, compassion, and respect.  Another suggestion is to develop a more detailed, structured Code of Conduct.

We would love your input at a meeting on Monday, April 12th at 6p.  Please join us via zoom as we would appreciate your thoughts and ideas.

Volunteer Spotlight

So proud of our Programs Department for getting together and working their magic on all things Wednesday Night Sail!

Let’s give three cheers to our Vice Commodore Laura Gadley, Programs Director Beven Peters & Wednesday Night Sail Coordinator Robyn Vandever

♥️⛵️ Thanks ladies!

Safety Equipment on Board

At a recent Nauti Drinks get together, a great conversation came up about safety equipment needed on a boat. The Oregon Marine Board, as the following checklist depending on the size and type of boat:
https://www.oregon.gov/osmb/bo...
On the OWSA website, the Education Team publishes a safety equipment list used in classes and it can
be found under Resources. The OWSA Race Committee publishes a safety equipment list with a nice
comparison to the Coast Guard and OCSA safety equipment checklists. This can be found under
Opportunities/Racing at the bottom of the page.

Be Safe – Sail on 2021!

Wednesday Night Sail (WNS)

We're just (2) short months away from the 2021 WNS series!  This popular summer series will take place this June thru September.  Our first sail is scheduled for Wednesday, 6/2. Save the date!

We have several Skippers lined-up and looking forward to sailing with OWSA members again this summer.  You'll get an opportunity to get to know our WNS Skippers (virtually) during a "Meet the Skipper" session in May.  Please mark your calendars for OWSA's General Meeting on Monday, 5/12.

In the meantime, our WNS coordination team is working to finalize the necessary guidelines.  Covid-related precautions must continue at least through the 2021 series.  More information will be sent to all members via email in the next few weeks.

I look forward to seeing you all out on the water!
